January 18th,
1997 I took a trip to Singapore to teach a Hazardous Materials class to one of our
Joint Venture Wafer Fabs, TECH Semiconductor. The trip took two weeks and was a
great experience. Singapore is a beautiful Country with alot of trees, shrubs and
flowers lining the roadways and medians. The only part I hated about the trip was the 26
hour plane fight. Driving in Singapore is different, Automobiles drive on the
opposite side of the roadway, we took a cab everywhere we went.
Motorcycles are everywhere, driving between the lanes of cars to get to their destination.
I even saw a Medical EMS motorcycle and Paramedic. Now
that's a quick way to get to the scene of an accident while waiting on the
Ambulance. The bike was outfitted like a Police bike but had all the medical
equipment on it for First Response.
I got to taste several different types of food while I was there, but was longing
for a big steak and potato. We finally found an American Food type of restaurant and I was
satisfied. Oh, DR Pepper is not the official Drink either, Coca Cola was
every where, and it took me 1-1/2 weeks to find some DR. Pepper. If you like
Seafood, There is plenty of that too. I arrived just in time to see them
celebrate the Chinese New Year. Some of the pictures below were taken at night
during the celebration.
Everyone I met in Singapore was so nice and helpful. I hope
to travel there again in the future.
While there, I visited 2 of their Fire Stations. The
Fire Dept. is part of the Civil Defence network. I want to thank the guys at the
fire station for taking the time to show us around their equipment and station. They even
pulled the DECON POD Out of the station and dropped it on the
ground from the truck. They have several of the containers set up for different
situations.
